Best digital Nomad Health Insurance: Honest Review

Choosing the right digital nomad health insurance is crucial for anyone living this lifestyle. Ensuring you have the appropriate coverage for any emergency can be as important as making sure you have a reliable laptop or a strong internet connection.

Being a digital nomad for around three years now I’ve learned a lot about this topic (the hard way).

So in this article, I’ll cover everything I’ve learned, from the differences between health insurance and travel insurance, wich insurance providers are the best for digital nomads as well as which option might be the right one for you.

Health Insurance vs. Travel Insurance

Before we explore specific providers of digital nomad health insurance, it’s vital to understand the difference between health insurance and travel insurance.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is the right choice for you, if you are still covered in your home country. Usually travel insurance is for, well “travelling”, so you are used to only be covered to a certain amount of time outside of your home country (no longer with offers from Genki & SafetyWing! More about it in a bit). Also it only covers emergency medical expenses not checkups or comprehensive health services which you might also want to undertake when living abroad.

That said, for the first two years of traveling as a digital nomad I was still covered in my home country and only had a travel insurance. And my partner Kuba is still to this day using SafetyWing as his trusted travel insurance.

Health Insurance

International Health insurance, on the other hand, offers comprehensive medical coverage across multiple countries, ideal for digital nomads that are no longer covered in their home country. It typically includes routine check-ups, emergency services, and sometimes coverage for pre-existing conditions, depending on the policy.

I chose Genki as my digital nomad Health Insurance provider and after my first claim that was processed and accepted within 48 hours I can only recommend it.

Genki vs. SafetyWing:
Which Insurance is best for Digital Nomads?

By now, you should have a clearer idea of whether you need travel insurance or health insurance. But which insurance provider should you pick, Genki or SafetyWing

To give you a better overview I put together two comprehensive comparisons.

The first graph compares the travel insurance offers and the second one the health insurance offers of these two providers.

If you are like me and you need to get a health insurance, here is my brief comparison of the options from SafetyWing and Genki.

I only included the cheapest offers in the graph but there are more expensive offers. The “Genki Native Premium” for example includes more services (such as coverage in your home country, a lot of preventive care and pregnancy) and is the package I chose for my worldwide health insurance.

Also worth mentioning is, that in the price of SafetyWing’s offer includes a travel insurance. So it also covers delayed transportation and luggage loss, theft, accomodation cancelation and a lot more.

Our opinion

To wrap things up, both Genki and SafetyWing are great insurance providers, each offering robust options tailored for digital nomads.

My partner Kuba chose SafetyWing for his travel insurance as he is still insured in his home country and it has no deductibles. In our experience in most cases you will have minor costs at doctors, when you have a small injury or a flu, which often costs less or just a bit above 50€.

Personally, I chose Genki Native Premium as my health insurance as I am no longer insured in my home country and I want to have the best possible medical care, as well as preventive care and check-ups without having to worry.

I hope this article helped you to in finding the ideal health insurance option for your lifestyle as a digital nomad!

Stay safe,

Amelie
